The West Virginia Water Research Institute (WVWRI) and Ascend WV are excited to announce the official date for the Second Mon River Sweep! On May 10th, 2025, we invite you to join us in removing trash from the Monongahela River and its surrounding land as part of Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO)'s Ohio River Sweep Season.
Whether you're an experienced volunteer or new to community clean-up efforts, we welcome all hands on deck. This event can also count for personal or organization volunteer hours. Participants can meet at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park and choose to volunteer for shift one (10am-12:30pm), or two (12:30pm-3pm). Feel free to stay for one shift or both, every bit of help counts! We look forward to seeing you there!
To volunteer, please fill out the following form: MRS Volunteer Sign Up
If you would like to request hours through WVU iServe, please fill out the need request: MRS iServe
No boat? No problem!! While there will be limited boats supplied for those who don’t bring their own, many volunteers opt to sweep the river sides and Mon River Trail.
The Monongahela River stretches through Morgantown and is a major draw for recreational activities in the area. This river creates beautiful scenery for the Mon River Trail where community members exercise daily. Additionally, the Mon River also provides the community with recreation opportunities such as fishing and boating. Unfortunately, the Mon River also collects trash from runoff around the town and trail. The goal of the 2025 Mon River Sweep is to support the health of the Monongahela River Basin and help keep our community thriving.
