We are excited to announce that that the 3rd annual Monongahela River Sweep will be held this April! This event is hosted by the West Virginia Water Research Institute and Ascend WV.
This year, the event will occur on Saturday, April 18th, 10am to 3pm at Ruby Hazel Ruby McQuain Park. Volunteers will be collecting trash from the Monongahela River, the banks, and the rail trail. Participants may volunteer for a portion or the entire event time. Participants can receive hours on iServe for their help in this event if desired.
Kayaks will be provided by Ascend WV for volunteers to use and collect trash from the water. The number of kayaks available is limited so if you can provide your own boat and PFD please do, however it is not necessary to get in the water to participate! Many volunteers stick to picking up trash along the rail trail and helping move larger trash pieces collected from the river.
Last year, an estimated 70 volunteers participated in the Mon River Sweep, and around 3 tons (6,000 pounds) of trash was collected from the river and the rail trail! This year, we hope that we can collect more trash and see some new faces at the river sweep.
